Checking in & out

Langkawi
Malaysian formalities are quick and easy, coming or going. The harbour master, customs and immigration are all conveniently located at Bass Harbour's ferry jetty. No fees.

Passengers and crew must have a passport valid for at least six months beyond intended stay in Malaysia. Crew of most Western nationalities are granted entry without visas for one to three months, depending on country of origin.

Entry without visas is granted to citizens of the Commonwealth (except Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka), Western Europe, Algeria, Argentina, Bahrain, Czech Republic, Egypt, Hungary, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Slovak Republic, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE, Yemen and the USA.

Other countries require visas. Citizens of Israel, Serbia and Montenegro are not allowed to enter Malaysia without the prior approval of the government.

Crew of yachts staying long-term at Rebak Marina can obtain a two-year visa with a letter from the marina manager.

Otherwise, visa extensions are difficult to obtain, so you will have to leave the country and return. See visa runs.

Firearms must be declared to and sealed by customs until departure; permit required. Pets must be cleared by the health department, and a permit issued by the Agriculture Ministry's veterinary services department, before being allowed ashore.

Yachts are required to clear in and clear out at each Malaysian port visited, though crews sometimes forget.

Yachts are permitted to remain in Malaysia indefinitely, while crew can come and go without restriction. This makes Langkawi an ideal place to leave your boat if you wish to return home or go travelling for an extended period.

Health warning: Of course you already know this, but in both Thailand and Malaysia, penalties for the import or export of illegal drugs can shorten your life expectancy.
