Boatyards
Phuket
There are two facilities for the haulout of yachts:
the Boat Lagoon and Ratanachai Slipway. At the Boat Lagoon, the marina
operates the travel lift and hardstand, but work is done by private
contractors who either operate small adjacent yards or will visit
your boat at the marina hardstand. Ratanachai is a full-service boatyard,
employing a variety of tradesmen, and charges a daily fee for using
outside contractors. Of course, at either you can do your own work.
Rantanachai Slipway
Phuket's main commercial shipyard, capable of hauling ferries, freighters,
fishing trawlers and yachts up to 180 tons. Maximum size LOA 45 metres,
beam 9.1 metres and draft 3.5 metres. Welding, metal machining and
fabrication, engine repairs and refits, carpentry, fibreglass work,
painting and chain galvanizing. Rental of power tools. Yard shop sells
anti-fouling and epoxy supplies.
Monohull two-way haul out costs 200-230 baht/foot, and
8-12 baht/foot daily in dry dock, depending on size of boat. Prices
for multihulls negotiable. First and last day free. Pressure cleaning
25 baht/foot. Scaffolding and ladder free. Pad repositioning free.
Book by phone, email or in person, providing yacht dimensions and
photo of keel profile, required to set up the slipway carriage.
It's not the most romantic place to liveaboard for a
week or two, especially with an aromatic fish factory next door, nor
the quietest since work can continue late into the night, but quite
okay, with friendly staff, translators, showers and toilets, and motorcycle
rental available. Some people choose to stay in nearby Phuket Town.
East of Phuket Town, at 60/58 Ta-Rua Mai Road, Tambol
Rasada. Call 076 252 852 or 076 210 246-7, fax 076 212 443, email
info@rantanachai-slipways.com. No VHF.
Channel entrance is northeast of Ao Chalong, two miles
north of Koh Thaphao Yai. Narrow channel often busy with ferry and
fishing traffic. Enter at higher tide if you draw more than 1.5 metres.
Beware shallows to starboard. Slipway is on port side, about 0.5 miles
from entrance.
Boat Lagoon
Reasonably comfortable place to live on the hard, but busy during
the day and can be hot since lagoon is sheltered from sea breezes.
Reasonably priced air-con accommodation
is available for those who wish to move off their boat while work
is under way.
Hardstand has space for about 120 yachts, with
60- and 80-tonne travel lifts. For more information on the Boat Lagoon,
see marinas.
