Cruising guides
Sail Thailand
By Andy Dowden and Bill O'Leary, photos by John Everingham
Now in its 4th edition, this is a good island-by-island guide to the
Phuket-Langkawi region, with sections on the Gulf of Thailand, including
Samui and Pattaya, and Burma's Mergui Archipelago, with colourful
sketch plans, beautiful photos, suggested anchorages, marinas, warnings
and a directory of shore services.
Andaman Sea Pilot
By Andy Dowden and Bill O'Leary
The authors of Sail Thailand took the theme and ran with it,
covering much of the same ground, with more detailed charts of anchorages,
and expanded to include the Andaman and Nicobar islands. First edition
came out in 2004, with plans for annual update editions.
Cruising Guide to Southeast Asia, Vol. I and II
By Stephen Davies and Elaine Morgan
No pilot covers Southeast Asia in greater detail. Volume I deals with
the South China Sea, Philippines, and the Gulf of Thailand down to
Singapore. Volume II focuses on Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the
Malacca Strait to Phuket. Each volume has dozens of detailed plans
for harbours and anchorages, including sailing directions, as well
as navigation, communications and country information. The authors'
discussion of tropical weather is encyclopedic. Hard to put down.
Indian Ocean Cruising Guide
By Rod Heikell
A good overall guide to popular cruising destinations in the Indian
Ocean. Has sections covering Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. Covers
a massive area, so coverage of Phuket-Langkawi not as detailed as
other guides. But has some excellent plans and good coverage of west
coast Malaysia, and is indispensible if you are heading west.
