Tides

The tidal range in the Andaman Sea can be more than three metres at spring tides. Since many anchorages are quite shallow, caution is required when choosing where to drop the hook.

Planning is also required when going ashore by dinghy at some anchorages, such as Phuket's popular Ao Chalong or Langkawi's Bass Harbour, where at low tide mariners can be faced with a long wait or a slog across mud or broken coral to put their dinghy back in the water.

Tidal steams rarely exceed one or two knots.
